NIJL Delivers Enhanced Engineering Access Stair for KLM at Schiphol Airport

Overview
In a continued partnership to advance aircraft maintenance safety and efficiency, NIJL has delivered a customized WB PAX Entry Stair (Torentrap) to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Tailored to meet the specific operational needs for aircraft maintenance at Schiphol Airport, this next-generation stair includes enhanced safety features and mobility upgrades designed for seamless access to wide-body aircraft

Background
KLM required an upgrade to its existing Torentrap systems to accommodate evolving health, safety, and operational demands. Following a collaborative review and site visit in September 2024, NIJL finalized a design based on its MPS13/27 WB Access Stair – a proven model with enhancements to suit KLM’s specific use case.
Key Features & Innovations
- Aircraft Compatibility: Suitable for a wide range of aircraft including B787, B777, A330, A320NEO, A350 – ensuring versatility across KLM’s fleet.
- Height Adjustable Platform: Ranges from 2.73 to 5.67 meters using an electro-hydraulic system with dual failure protection.
- Enhanced Safety Gates: The stair now features one-way swing gates that automatically lock, preventing falls during platform operations.
- Fall Protection: Pivotable floor plate and slidable orange railing minimize gaps between platform and aircraft.
- Mobility Upgrades: Includes an electric drive system (mover) with increased power, four-corner manual parking jacks.
- Electrical System: 240V system with onboard battery pack supports movement and height adjustment, plus dual sockets on the platform for tooling.
- Standards Compliance: Adheres to a full suite of EN, ISO, and EC machinery safety standards.
Outcome
The custom-engineered Torentrap solution represents a strategic upgrade in KLM’s ground support infrastructure. It improves operational safety, platform versatility, and maneuverability – aligning with KLM’s commitment to technical excellence and staff well-being in MRO operations.
